More about soapstone pieces

Kenyan soapstone, also known as Kisii stone, comes from a tiny area in the western highlands of Kenya, close to Kisii town.  It’s a stone comprised of talc, quartz and various impure minerals compressed over millions of years in the earth.  Over the centuries the Kisii people used soapstone to make pots and other practical tools.  Today, our skilled artists paint and carve the stone into beautiful, decorative pieces.  They start with a large block of stone, carve it into the desired shope, polish it, dye it and incise a design into it, all by hand! There is no room for error as the artist carefully carves the design into the piece.  Each piece is one-of-a-kind.

Every Gifts on a Mission product comes packaged with a card that tells the story of the artists and information on what makes the product special.
