Karaho Farm – Nyahururu, Kenya

No living trees ever fell to make these beautiful and functional pieces.  The farm workers at Kaharo Farm used to look at the old tree stumps as a nuisance to their job of plowing the fields.  That was until they decided they could carve them into beautiful pieces. The trees were cut down decades ago and stumps and roots were left behind.  They are committed to only using the dead stumps since live ones will sprout again and give them new trees.

The stumps could be used for firewood but they said, “no one will remember the fuel made form these trees, but these useful items can be with us forever”.  Some of the wood is centuries old.  It is very hard and the pieces are entirely hand crafted by men who enjoy making them in their spare time with simple tools.  They make beautiful decorative pieces for your home.
